The introduction of Bantu Education in 1954 led to an exodus of South Africans into Swaziland, which intensified after the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960. During this time, Swaziland became a gateway for South Africans seeking refuge.

In the 1970s, South Africa experienced a struggle for freedom, highlighted by the Soweto uprising on June 16, which prompted many young people to flee to Swaziland.

eSwatini became a thorn for apartheid-era South Africa, resisting attempts to subdue this multi-racial kingdom. In the 1970s and 1980s, it emerged as a cultural centre amidst UN-led economic sanctions and a cultural boycott.
