'Daar doer in die fliek' is a sociable documentary where Leon looks back in nostalgia at the history of Afrikaans films.
During the 1940s a feeling of national unity arises in South Africa, and most of films are about national pride. At the same time Pierre de Wet starts producing films for entertainment.
This week we take a look at André Huguenet's contribution to Afrikaans films, and at the man from the Bushveld who started a small revolution: Jamie Uys.
The first Afrikaans horror "Die man in die donker" sees the light. The beautiful Marie Du Toit makes her debut while Frederik Burgers and Al Debbo win over the nation with their slapstick comedy.

Afrikaans movies take a nostalgic look at the past for C.M. van den Heever's Somer. Franz Marx films a thriller, Die Vlindervanger, while Manie van Rensburg mocks Afrikaner conservatism.
Wilna Snyman's "Liefste Madelein" has viewers grabbing their hankies. The first movie about racism in rugby, "Springbok" with Eckhard Rabe and Sybil Coetzee, ruffles many feathers.
Tobie Cronjé has everybody in stitches in "Kom tot Rus" and other movies. Jan Scholtz produces the one film after the other, and "Daar kom Tant Alie" let us forget about politics.

The film industry experiences a dry spell with a few TV series masquerading as movies. However, Katinka Heyns brings revival with "Paljas", "Fiela se Kind" en "Die Storie van Klara Viljee".
The age of vulgar comedies dawns with Willie Esterhuizen's "Poena is Koning" and "Vaatjie sien sy Gat". "Karate Kallie" and "Bakgat" has youngsters rolling in the aisles.
2011 gives birth to a small renaissance in the Afrikaans movie industry: "Die Ongelooflike Avonture van Hanna Hoekom", "Susanna van Biljon", "Liefling" and the controversial "Roepman".
Afrikaans people love romcoms and we take a look at two of the most popular ones, Semi-Soet and Pretville. Die Wonderwerker raises Afikaans film to art, and Verraaiers shows us our dark side.
Producers try out new formulas. Prescribes school books are filmed, like "Lien se Lankstaanskoene". Deon Meyer writes two scripts, and comedies are still popular.
Afrikaans movies have to be accepted among international films. The raw realism of "Faan se Trein" and the gangster tale "Four Corners" are very far from the popular romcoms.
Within a few years 2011's Silwerskermfees grows into a film festival that includes documentaries and movies in other languages. And our younger talents don't want to play safe anymore.
