Downton Abbey

Season two picks up the story in 1916 during World War I. A new maid proves difficult, and an announcement from Matthew Crawley stuns everybody, particularly Mary. Meanwhile, there are dramas and surprises for everyone.

Lord Grantham's new valet, Lang, has recently returned from active duty and suffers in a way that only the harsh Miss O'Brien seems to understand. Meanwhile, former footman Thomas wishes to return to the household.

Downton has been turned into a convalescent home for wounded officers, and there is much to do. O'Brien is shocked that Isobel Crawley seems to be giving most of the orders while Cora is relegated to the background.

Tensions flare between Isobel and Cora over managing the convalescent home. Ethel's flirtation with Maj. Bryant lands her in more trouble than she could have anticipated.

Bates is taken aback when Vera threatens to expose old secrets which could bring down the Crawleys. Mary is the only one who can protect the family, but she pays a high price when she turns to Carlisle for help.

Isobel has plans for Downton to continue to help the war wounded in some way after Robert's announcement that the ceasefire will begin on Nov. 11. Meanwhile, Bates once again finds that he must deal with Vera and travel to London.

A new development stuns the family. Sybil and Branson try to keep their secret safe. Sir Richard Carlisle puts Anna in a difficult position. Bates is left reeling from the news about Vera, and Thomas embarks on a new money-making scheme.

Spanish flu reaches Downton, and desperate, Thomas looks for a way to re-establish himself. Ethel faces a dilemma when the Bryants return with a heartbreaking proposition. Anna is decisive and forces Bates to think about their future.

Tensions arise as Downton Abbey hosts a lavish Christmas party.

As the finale continues, problems are brewing for Violet as she is unsure of her daughter, Rosamund's new beau, who seems almost too good to be true. Strife continues for Lady Mary and Sir Richard after another confrontation.
