Koekedoortjie, Episode 1

We meet the ten junior bakers who will battle it out in the Koekedoortjie kitchen. Who will be the king of cakes and the boss of breads?

The magical kitchen studio was covered in snow overnight. Our bakers' first challenge is to make South Pole snow peaks, similar to the much-loved Sweetie Pies in red wrappers.

Our bakers get the chance to sell quiches at a stall at the morning market. Whose quiche will sell like hot cake and whose quiche won't hit the mark?

Our young bakers must bake bread inspired by our cooking traditions and baking culture. It can be any type of bread, but must be flavoured with a typical South African ingredient.

Our contestants must choose two of their favourite biscuits that evokes pleasant memories and create a new scrapbook biscuit from it. Most importantly, the flavours must complement each other.

Our contestants use self-made bread flour containing yeast to bake a bread animal. The bread must also include some other food element.

Our contestants receive a boxed cake mix, the kind that only needs eggs and oil added to the mix. But there's a twist... Our bakers must transform the ordinary box cake into an extraordinary cake.

Our bakers must bake a modern lava pudding. They must use new ingredients and flavour combinations or bake it in a different way.

Our young bakers get to construct a cake to represent a certain game. This construction challenge can be child's play if they stick to the building regulations...

We host a pop concert, and our contestants must prepare sweets and treats inspired by their favourite pop music, pop group or singer.

The finalists must reach for the stars when they bake a fabulous occasional cake to show why they are worthy of the Koekedoortjie winner title.
