Newly married Livia Drusilla becomes embroiled in the political turmoil following the assassination of Julius Caesar. She has to make an impossible decision to save her son's life and her own.

When an amnesty is suddenly declared, a pregnant Livia returns to Rome and sets out to rebuild her family fortunes by seducing Gaius. But she is still married, and so is he.

Livia has to help Gaius keep his power over the Senate despite her secret mission to restore the Republic, while managing a vicious family feud between her son Tiberius and Octavia's son, Marcellus.

Livia's marriage to Gaius is compromised when she learns that she can't bear him any children. As her rivals circle, she stokes the antipathy between Marcellus and Agrippa to restore the balance of power in her favour.

Gaius' sudden illness provokes a political crisis and reveals the true weakness of Livia's position without him. It's up to Livia to resolve the situation, and keep Gaius safe.

Livia must eliminate Marcellus, who plans to kill her sons and exile her and Antigone. Her plan is complicated by the revelation that their agent is in love with the target.
