1914. With the outbreak of World War I, Willem, Gerhard, P.G. and Bennie duty-bound join the Boer Rebellion and forge a blood pact with each other.
Willem joins the National Party; Bennie starts a charity initiative and P.G. a new career. Gerhard returns to the mines where his unique opinions about the unions attract attention.
1915. When poverty forces Willem into a corner, he decides to take money from the party supporters and is caught. Bennie breaks contact with Ina. P.G. becomes an apprentice at the printing press.
1921. P.G. buys Mr. Cohen's printing business. Gerhard stands at the head of a union that initiates the big mine strike. Willem gets involved with the Republican Army.
1922. Willem and Soekie's relationship develops quickly amid his responsibilities at the Republican Army. After his father is murdered, Bennie takes the law into his own hands.
After the strike each of the blood brothers must suffer the consequences thereof. Gerhard is arrested and P.G. decides to rather lose his business than to renounce his beliefs.
1929. Gerhard works at the Communist Party of South Africa. Willem discloses to the Republican Army that his former friend is a communist. P.G. wants to start a family magazine.
Willem finds a way to penetrate the South African Communist Party. Bennie and Ina's relationship starts to wither as Bennie's power in the National Party starts to grow.
Ina resents Bennie over her miscarriage. He seeks affection from Marika with disastrous consequences. Ingrid makes herself eligible for parliament. Willem carries out more clandestine plans.
It is 1939. War has started in Europe and influences each of the blood brothers and their families in a unique way.
Three of the blood brothers are still held captive. But then Ingrid finds out about Marika and Bennie's relationship and their child out of wedlock, and blackmails Bennie to orchestrate the other three's release.
1948. Ina is addicted to Laudanum and Bennie's political power. Willem's son, Marthinus, and Gerhard's daughter, Antoinette, is secretly in love. Willem finds out and forbid the relationship.
To share blood and call yourself blood brothers is one thing. To cope with what life throws at you and still honour that oath, is something completely different…
